| Symptoms | Possible Causes | Remedies |
| A. Cloudy Water | - pH too high
- Algae
- Poor circulation
- Total alkalinity too high
- Undissolved chemical residue (discontinue use of calcium hypochlorite based chlorine)
- Swimmer wastes (buildup of water soluble organic wastes)
| - Lower with pH Decreaser.
- See “Algae” for proper procedure.
- Inspect filtration system.
- Lower withF pH Decreaser or Muriatic Acid, or partially drain pool and refill with fresh water
- Switch to a fully soluble chlorine product.
- Remove buildup with a shock treatment product.
- Use clarifying product.
|
| B. Colored Water | - Chlorine changes unwanted minerals in your water into highly visible compounds.
- Algae
| - Use an iron removing product to remove metal deposits and discoloration. Run filter 24 hours a day until condition clears. To aid in this process add appropriate clarifier.
- For algae, see below.
|
| C. Algae | - Insufficient free chlorine residual
- Daily maintenance program is insufficient.
| - Superchlorinate or add non-chlorine shock product.
- Adjust pH to 7.2 – 7.8 range.
- Brush pool walls to expose algae.
- Add the proper algaecide product to remove algae.
- Vacuum dead algae next day.
- To prevent algae, maintain a chlorine residual of 1.0 – 3.0 ppm as well as periodical additions of appropriate algaecide. **Consult your pool professional on best algaecide for your problem**
|
| D. Stains | - Corrosion of pool’s hardware due to low pH
- High pH
- High alkalinity
- Dissolved metals
| - Adjust pH to 7.2 – 7.8.
- Adjust total alkalinity
- Lower pH with pH Decreaser or Muriatic Acid or partially drain pool and refill with fresh water.
- Treat pool with stain control product.
|
| E. Scale (mineral deposits accumulation on pool’s surface, plumbing, filters and heater) | - Mineral deposits caused by hard water
- Accumulation of dissolved minerals
| - Contact your professional pool dealer for the correct action to be taken.
- Adjust pH to 7.2 – 7.8
- Adjust total alkalinity
- Treat with chelating/sequestering agent.
|
| F. Poor Filtration (circulation impeded resulting in increased pressure) | - Restricted water flow caused by algae, swimmer wastes, and/or water imbalance.
- Calcification
- Suntan lotions
- Clogged or dirty filter
| - Treat problem as outlined earlier.
- Adjust pool’s water balance: pH, total alkalinity and hardness.
- Clean filter
- Backwash filter
|
| G. Eye Irritation / Chlorine Odor | - Improper pH
- Chloramines
| - Adjust pH to 7.2 - 7.8.
- Remove buildup with shock treatment product.
|
| H. Foaming | - High doses of algaecides
- Buildup of soluble organic debris
| - Will dissipate with time, or remove water as necessary
- Remove build-up with shock treatment product.
|
| I. Can’t hold or get a proper chlorine reading | - Filter isn’t running long enough if using an automatic chlorinator.
- Initial chlorine demand was high.
- Stabilizer level is low.
- Heavy pool use
- Old chlorine test reagents
| - Run filter each day for longer duration.
- Add chlorine product and retest. Repeat process until a reading is established.
- Add stabilizer.
- Remove buildup with shock treatment product.
- Replace test reagents (should be replaced annually).
